How to Stop Leash Pulling—John Sorosky’s Method

As a trainer with over four decades’ experience, I’ve helped hundreds of dogs (and owners) tackle leash pulling, often in just a few focused sessions. Here are my top step-by-step strategies:

  1. Start with a Gentle Leader headcollar for strong pullers—it provides gentle control of the head and helps prevent lunging without force. Introduce it slowly and pair it with plenty of rewards.
  2. Use a front-clip harness for additional or alternative gentle guidance.
  3. Reward every brief check-in or pause.
  4. Stop, reset, and reward calm—never yank or scold.
  5. Train in short, positive sessions, 5–10 minutes at first.
